The news was jolting.

Subway was closing.

After two years of listing the Grand Marais Subway for sale, there were several parties who expressed interest but no buyers, said Rob and Lorrie Svadlenka.

“Our two-year lease was coming due on January 31, that’s why we had to decide to close on Tuesday, Jan. 22,” said Rob.

While the couple didn’t own the building, they do own the furnishings, kitchen equipment and lighting inside of the building. Rob said the equipment will be for sale and will be removed from the premise by the end of the month. Unless, that is, someone buys it, leases the building and starts their own restaurant in the space.

When asked what’s next, Rob said they were going to take some time off, take a vacation and make time for family. After that, they will look for work.

“I’ve been doing this for more than 15 years,” said Rob. “I have been making subs for Subway for more than 26 years,” said Lorrie.

Both are ready for a change, but say they will miss their loyal customers.
