The Silver Bay-Cook County Mariners hockey team recently finished the 2011-2012 season with a 14-12 record. The team was assisted at both ends of the ice by three Cook County Senior High students. Sophomore forward Thomas Anderson, sophomore defenseman Ben Kroska, and freshman goaltender Alex Murray all played key roles in the Mariners’ success.
Thomas Anderson finished his first varsity season with 11 goals and 17 assists, with several of his points coming at key times in close games. Thomas is known as a gritty winger who plays physical along the boards and in front of the opposing team’s net. He is especially adept at making passes out of the defensive zone and is a key part of his line’s success at both ends of the ice.
Ben Kroska played an important role off the bench in a very young group of defensemen. His ability to step onto the ice with any defensive partner helped the team to achieve its lowest goals against average in several years. He is known as a defensive defenseman who stays at home and plays the body along the boards and in front of the net.
Goaltender Alex Murray finished the season with a .909 save percentage and 3.24 goals against average. Both statistics led all Minnesota High School League freshmen goalies, and his save percentage is the second best in the history of the Silver Bay program.
In the sectional quarterfinal game against Duluth Marshall, Alex made 67 saves as the Mariners were outshot 74-7 by the Hilltoppers. His performance set a new team record and is an unofficial MSHSL playoff record.
