Grand Marais Rec Park Director Dave Tersteeg reported that this May was busier than last May at the Rec Park by as much as “eight to ten percent.” But, he noted, “May is a soft month” for business.
Tersteeg was addressing the park board at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 6.
Meanwhile, two big projects in the park are underway. Crawford Excavating has been rebuilding the 8th Avenue stormwater pond, adding a two-tier flow setting in the pond and an engineered drain to allow slower dispersal of stormwater to the creek that winds through the park. The project should be through by the end of this month,
On June 5th, Global Specialties began working on the Overlook Landing on the other side of the park. Work is expected to take several months and be completed by September.
The 2023 Grand Marais Recreation Area Master Plan is in the public engagement phase right now through June. Comments can be made online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/GMRA2023 or paper copies can be picked up at city hall, the library, or the park office.
The park board approved five special event applications: Music in the Parks Busking for the Grand Marais Music Collaborative; Fourth of July Fireworks for the Grand Marais Lions Club; Stars of the North Music Festival, hosted by the Grand Marais Music Collaborative; the annual four-day Fisherman’s Picnic hosted by the Grand Marais Lions Club and the Fishburger Stand in Harbor Park. The Lions want to open the Fish burger stand on July 15-16, July 22-23, and July 29-30.
