The Grand Marais Rec Park is coming back to life and greening up after a long winter’s slumber.
On May 4, Park Manager Dave Tersteeg told the park board that some seasonal staff started back to work on April 26. Wasting no time, the staff had the water turned on across the park’s eight zones, including all four bathhouses and luckily, said Tersteeg, there were no leaks.
A few seasonal campers are back in the park, but bookings are pretty lean until May 14, noted Tersteeg.
The parks first full weekend will be Memorial Day.
Anyone wanting to drive to the beach near the the Coast Guard parking lot won’t be able to do so this summer. Large rocks were placed along the northern edge of the entrance to the Coast Guard parking lot to preserve pedestrian lakeside space at Boulder Park.
The barrier of boulders will also help protect the Wayne Potratz canoe sculpture that was damaged in a hit and run. The sculpture is now being repaired and will be placed in Boulder Park on the beach. Tersteeg said picnic tables were added to the Boulder Park area, as well as to the library lawn and Harbor Park.
“We now have a total of 24 picnic tables in the downtown district,” he said.
The parkside public access work should commence sometime late June, early July. The company doing the work is Veit. They will also take down the dog pound and old public works garage in conjunction with the breakwall project.
During construction, the entire area south of the picnic pavilion will be fenced and gated to control access to the work site.
Dave said the breakwall should be substantially completed by the end of this September. Final completion is due October 28.
The boat ramp and parking lot will be bid this summer and the work will be done in 2022.
Gunflint Hills Golf report
Good news for golfers, Gunflint Hills is open for business on May 8.
Music lovers will be happy to learn that Tom Knutson and Pete Kavanaugh each received permits for busking in Harbor Park this summer.
