Grand Marais PUC seeking participants for home EV Charging Pilot Program

The Grand Marais Public Utilities Commission has approved the creation of a pilot ‘time-of-use’ rate for utility customers with electric vehicles who wish to charge their EVs at home. The purpose of the rate is to promote electric vehicles while responding to increased demand from electrification.

The new rate is structured to incentivize charging during off-peak hours. During the period of 11p.m. to 8 a.m. electricity for charging EVs will be $0.055/kWh, half of the general service rate. During all other hours (8 a.m.-11 p.m.), the price increases to $0.30/kWh. There is an additional $8/mo. service charge to cover the cost of an extra meter to track the time-of-use rate. Customers who regularly charge their vehicles during off-peak times should expect to see significant savings each month.

The rate will begin as a pilot program with a limited number of participants to determine efficacy. If successful, the rate will be offered to any utility customers who are EV owners.
