Once again, Grand Marais Public Utilities Commission partnered with the Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association to stage a scholarship essay contest for graduating Cook County High School seniors who will further their post-secondary education in college or vocational school.
This year the theme was “Municipal Utilities: Good for all of us.”
Grand Marais PUC received four essays in the contest and the commissioners noted how well written they were.
Taking the top award of $500 went to CeCe Cmelik for her essay. In part, CeCe wrote, “Electricity is even more important now as everyday lives and even communities shift to have an online presence. When Cook County High School went online for my junior year, my peers and I needed electricity to power our education and keep the routers, well, routing. Our schooling and social lives were the most linked they had ever been to the outlets in our walls. Even now, my education is reliant on the ability to turn on a computer and write an essay like this one.”
Second place went to RaeAnne Silence, who will receive $300.
Greta Roth took the third spot. Like the other two contestants, she will receive her check for $200 at the CCHS awards day.
