Grand Marais, Minnesota, April 20, 2020 – The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library, as the Minnesota Center for the Book, announced the launch of One Book | One Minnesota, a new statewide book club and discussion for Minnesotans of all ages. Grand Marais Public Library invites Cook County to join our neighbors in reading the inaugural title: Because of Winn-Dixie by Minnesota author Kate DiCamillo (Candlewick Press).
Presented in partnership with State Library Services, a division of the Minnesota Department of Education, the program aims to bring Minnesotans together during a challenging time and highlight the role of libraries as community connectors.
“Libraries are essential for connection, and through One Book | One Minnesota, libraries across the state – in partnership with local schools – will connect their communities through stories,” says Jen Nelson, Director of State Library Services. “Our goal is to bring Minnesotans closer together during this time of distance and adversity.”
During the months of April and May, Minnesotans will read Because of Winn-Dixie, a book chosen for its broad appeal. Currently celebrating its 20th anniversary of publication, the book is geared for youth but accessible across age groups. In it, ten-year-old India Opal Buloni goes down to the local supermarket for some groceries and instead comes home with a dog. But Winn-Dixie is no ordinary dog, and this is where the story really begins. Everyone will be invited to participate in a statewide virtual discussion with the author in May.
For eight weeks, Ebooks Minnesota is providing free digital copies of Because of Winn-Dixie. Readers can access the eBook through the library’s website: grandmaraislibrary.org.
