Grand Marais Public Library proves once again that there’s always something new to checkout in Cook County. Through a competitive application process, it was selected by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) as a participant in the Minnesota State Parks Library Program, which launches this June and lasts for one year. Starting Monday, June 14, the library will circulate two passes that provide free 7-day entry to Minnesota’s state parks including those in the Arrowhead. Members of the public, regardless of membership to the library, are eligible to reserve a pass and can contact or visit the library for details.
Increasingly, research shows that spending time in nature is vital to maintaining our well-being. Connecting with nature and exploring the great outdoors can improve mental and physical health. A one-day vehicle permit to enter state parks costs $7.00, which can sometimes be a financial barrier for community members. The DNR’s partnership with libraries aims to give more people the same opportunity to enjoy the benefits and beauty of nature by removing the entrance fee to state parks. Access to state parks creates opportunities for individuals and families to socialize in a relaxed, outdoor environment. The passes can also inspire folks to try a new state park for the first time.
“It’s so cool that the Grand Marais Library was selected for this program,” said Assistant Library Director Kristin Woizeschke. “Eliminating barriers to resources is part of our mission. I welcome everyone to try this with us and explore Minnesota’s parks.”
Passes for this program are funded by the DNR’s Parks and Trails Legacy Amendment dollars. Folks who try the program will be encouraged to complete a survey. The data are needed to support the program’s continuation. For more information about Minnesota’s parks, visit mndnr.gov.
