To create the world of Little Shop of Horrors, the Playhouse has invited professional theater artists to lead our community members in behind-the-scenes areas of production.
Come Learn about Scenic Art for the Theater- June 6- 10 from 1a.m. – 4 p.m., professional scenic artist Jenny Knott will be leading our community volunteers in the creation of brick walls for the set at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. This scenic technique will create temporary brick coverings for Playhouse stock scenery walls and help create “skid row” for the play. The set will also have temporary “ghost” signs painted onto the walls adding to the old, forgotten feeling of “skid row.” This is open to the public so stop by for an hour, all day or all week and learn scenic techniques to use in future productions as well as in your own home! Wear paint clothes. Young children must have an adult partner.
Come create the costumes for the show! The costumes for Little Shop will be designed by Pam Knourek with our local costumers Annie DeBevec and SaraJane Thomkins. Pam Knourek is a professor and co-director of costuming and costume technology at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Pam is coming to Grand Marais to help the Playhouse build interest in costuming and grow our community costuming team. Beginning July 5, the conference rooms at the ACA will be transformed into a costume shop where the magic will happen. The community is strongly encouraged to come participate and learn more about costuming for theater and join the team. All abilities are welcomed, young children must be partnered with an adult. Hours will be posted on Facebook and website when determined.
Also, on hand intermittently in June and July, Professional prop artist and fabricator, Jon O Erikson will be on hand to help with props for We Will Rock You and Little Shop of Horrors.
Work project times will be posted on Facebook as they are determined.
Doug Livesay will be returning to assist with the sound engineering for our musical and will hold a training session for our new-to-us digital sound board. This is open to the public and times will be posted as they are determined.
Please contact or sign up on the Playhouse website to be contacted for technical trainings, work times and auditions. We would love to have you join us!
To celebrate the 50th season, the Playhouse will create a historical exhibit in the lobby of the ACA during the summer. Help is needed in early July to place photos, posters, props and costumes that represent the over 300 productions created by this community theater since 1971. Please contact the Playhouse if interested.

Since 1971, local community members have gathered together to create live theater. In doing so they have created a stronger community through ensemble building, enhancing the education of our children and making Cook County a better place to live. The doors are open to all community members at all levels of experience to participate in every production. There are many roles throughout the organization that need you. We invite you to come see what the Playhouse offers and how it can enrich your life. Connect with others in positive creative ways and enjoy how live theater can transform your life and the life of our community.
