The Grand Marais Playhouse opens its summer season at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 23 with Love Letters by A.R. Gurney. Starring in the unique two-person show is Lee Altermatt of Grand Marais and Maureen Bazzett of Lutsen.
Bazzett has performed before, but this is her first Grand Marais Playhouse production. She decided to take on this role because she said Love Letters is such a wonderful play. “I think relationships are the most important things in our lives. This is about a really long-term relationship.”
Director Sue Hennessy explains, “This imaginative theatre piece is comprised of letters exchanged over a lifetime between two people who grew up together, went their separate ways, but continued to share confidences.”
The story of the relationship is told entirely through letters—each character taking a turn at reading the letter—and hearing the words of the other. “We each have our own space and time. It’s amazing how Sue works it out,” said Bazzett.
Bazzett said it is a serious play, with some intense moments, but it also has some light-hearted moments. “I think it’s just a lovely play. I hope that people will come out to see it.”
Performances of Love Letters are June 23 – 25 and 30 – July 4, with Thursday – Saturday shows at 7:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 adults and $7 students.
