The Grand Marais Playhouse is very pleased to present two shows this summer in repertory weekends from July 20 through August 13.
The two shows are Shout! The Mod Musical and the comedy Four Old Broads.
Shout! The Mod Musical was created by Phillip George, David Lowenstein, and Peter Charles Morris.
Originally produced Off-Broadway in New York City by Victoria Lange & P.P. Piccoli and Mark Schwartz, it celebrates the music, fashion, and freedom of the 1960s! This delightful musical revue follows five groovy gals as they come of age in 60s England and chronicles the dawning of the female empowerment movement. Travel in time in this nonstop journey through the ages. With its irresistible blend of eye-popping fashions, psychedelic dances and infectious and soulful pop anthems, SHOUT! The Mod Musical appeals to every generation. This smashing musical will make you throw your head back and SHOUT!
This musical was first performed in Grand Marais in 2011 with the cast of Hilja Iverson, Kerri Bilben, Karen Blackburn, Molly Hicken and Karina Roth. For this 2023 production, Karina’s daughters
Amelia and Greta are joined by fellow Grand Marais alum Aurora Schelmeske and two newcomers, Lilli Carlson and Hannah Miller. Together, they form an ensemble with gorgeous harmonies and delightful characters.
Karina returns to the show as the musical director of this production and, with her husband Mike, is the band joined by Erika Ternes and Kay Costello on Keyboard. Shout is directed by Sue Hennessy and choreographed by Christine Curtis.
Shout! The Mod Musical performances are July 20, 22, 28, 30, August 3, 5, 11 and 13.
Four Old Broads by Leslie Kimbell is about four sassy senior ladies: Beatrice, played by Beth Faraone, Eaddy, played by Jean Grover; Imogene, played by Laura Popkes, and Maude, played by Theresa Luther- Dolan, all need a break from bingo and macramé. They want to take a SASSY SENIORS Caribbean cruise. Unfortunately, things have not been pleasant at Magnolia Place Assisted Living since nasty nurse Pat, played by Kristina Mattson, came to work there. A mystery unfolds with laughter as the gals try to outsmart her—the Romance novel-loving nurse played by Yvonne Block.
Throw in a senior citizen beauty pageant, an old Elvis Impersonator played by Gary Latz, a trashy makeover and you have a laugh a minute evening of theater that will have you rolling in the aisles!
This production has many newcomers to the stage and seasoned veterans. Also new to the Playhouse is director Josh Hinke! Come enjoy a good laugh (we all need that!).
