The Grand Marais Playhouse is proud to present James and the Giant Peach, the tale of a magical peach! An imprisoned boy! Insect friends! An incredible journey! This amazing adventure of James Henry Trotter will fulfill the fantasy of anyone who has ever dreamed of escape.
Roald Dahl’s story comes hilariously to life in this delightful dramatization that reveals the wickedness of some, the goodness of others, and the indecision encountered by many when they are faced with crises. You will see James (as he cleverly gets the Peach out of danger), the wise Old- Green-Grasshopper and the pessimistic Earthworm.

This Richard R. George adaptation is directed by Sue Hennessy.
Shows are at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts April 17-18 at 7 p.m., April 19 at 2 p.m. April 24-25 at 7 p.m. and April 26 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 adults and $5 students. Advance tickets are available on-line at grandmaraisplayhouse.com. The box office opens one hour before each performance.
Award-winning performers on the North Shore
The Grand Marais Playhouse participated in the Minnesota Association of Community Theater festival at the Dassel-Cokato Performing Arts Center March 19-22 and came home with three awards! Beth Faraone won an award for outstanding achievement in acting.
The entire cast won an award for outstanding achievement in acting- Ensemble.
And the crew (Jack and Maria Nickolay) won an award for easiest to work with! This was an award voted on by the tech crew at the venue.
Sue Hennessy attended as a MACT board member and served as the stage manager for the entire festival. The Playhouse will hold an encore performance of the play September Bears by Jeff Barker in May as schedules permit. More information to come!
Lots of activities at the ACA
The Grand Marais Playhouse will offer classes in theater beginning in April with a class on memorization. Instructors will be Jack Nickolay and Rose Arrowsmith DeCoux. The class will be held April 22 and 23 from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. Cost will be $45. Pre-registration is required. The next Movie Night will be April 28 at 7 p.m. at the ACA. Licensing agreements prohibit advertising outside of the school facility so look for posters in the school and next to the Community Education office at the YMCA. A Reader’s Theater performance of A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams will be held in the ACA on May 6 at 6 p.m. Donation at the door.
Eleemosynary coming up
The Grand Marais Playhouse received a grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council to Produce Eleemosynary by Lee Blessing June 25-28 and July 2-5. There are roles for three women. Auditions will be May 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the ACA. Jack Nickolay will direct the play.
And finally, the cast of Moon Over Buffalo by Ken Ludwig, the 2015 Grand Marais Summer Theater Festival’s comedy production is Bob Carter, Marcia Hyatt, Jan Healy, Sarah Stover, Kevin Kager, Braidy Powers, Sarah Metis, and Tom Christiansen. Directed by Sue Hennessy.
