Grand Marais men charged with assault

Two Grand Marais men are awaiting trial after being arrested for an alleged break-in and assault in Grand Marais.

Cook County Law Enforcement received a 911 call at 2:43 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, from a man requesting medical assistance. The caller, Mark Danielson of Grand Marais, stated that he “got jumped” in his home and was bleeding.

Sheriff Deputies arrived to find Danielson hunched over and bleeding from the mouth. Deputies reported that there appeared to have been an altercation in the room, with broken glass on the floor and shelves knocked over. Danielson told deputies he had been asleep on the couch and the next thing he knew he was being beaten up. His alleged assailant was Austin Terry Oullis, 26, of Grand Marais.

Danielson was transported by Cook County Ambulance to Duluth for emergency medical care, complaining of neck pain, side and back pain.

According to the law enforcement report, a deputy discovered Oullis outside at the back of the house, with a bloody nose and knuckles. Oullis appeared to be intoxicated and was found to have a blood alcohol concentration of .11.

In a thorough inspection of the house, deputies observed that the door jamb was cracked as if someone had forced the door open. A friend who had arrived at the scene said the doorway was not like that earlier that day.

Sheriff Deputies interviewed Danielson when he was released from the hospital on May 18 and Danielson said he remembered another alleged assailant, Scott Michael Talbot, 47, of Grand Marais.

Oullis was charged with burglary in the 1st degree for entering a building without consent with intent to commit a crime and assault in the 5th degree. His initial court appearance was May 26. His next court appearance will be June 6, 2015.

Talbot was charged with burglary in the 1st degree and assault in the 3rd degree. He appeared in court on May 20 and County Attorney Molly Hicken requested that a mental examination be completed to determine if Talbot was competent to proceed with trial or if he meets the criteria for civil commitment.

Oullis and Talbot are both confined at Lake County Jail.
