A Grand Marais man left his residence on County Road 60 at about 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4 on what was meant to be an afternoon of riding his all-terrain vehicle (ATV). Instead Mark Johnson, 62, of Grand Marais became the subject of an overnight search.
The Cook County Sheriff ’s Office received a lost person call at approximately 12:54 a.m. on October 5. The caller said Johnson had contacted family members on his cell phone, letting them know he had run into difficulties continuing on his route because of heavy brush.
In a call about 6 p.m., Johnson told the reporting party that he was getting off the ATV and was walking home. However, he encountered difficulties traversing the heavy brush by foot as well.
From the last communication from Johnson it was believed he was about a mile north of a nearby road. Cook County Search and Rescue and sheriff deputies searched through the night on foot and by ATV with no success. At 6:41 a.m., a request was made for search canines to assist. However, before that search was mobilized, Johnson found his way to a neighbor’s residence.
