A Grand Marais man, Dan Berglund, 51, was injured on Thursday, August 25, when he struck a deer while traveling south on his 2009 Kawasaki on the Gunflint Trail near the Pincushion Mountain trails area.
The accident was reported at 5:55 a.m. Cook County Ambulance responded and Berglund was transported to North Shore Hospital and then transferred by ambulance to Duluth. He suffered two broken bones in his hip and at the base of his spine. He has been released from the hospital and is recuperating at home. It is believed his recovery will take 6 – 8 weeks.
Berglund was wearing a helmet, which his wife, Rachel Berglund, said they attribute to saving his life. Reached by phone, Rachel said, “Thankfully he was wearing his helmet, because his hip was the first thing that hit the pavement and then his head. He said he probably wouldn’t be alive if he hadn’t been wearing the helmet.”
The deer was killed in the accident.
