Kevin Robert Thompson, 52, of Grand Marais is facing multiple charges after allegedly imprisoning and terrorizing his wife and a Grand Marais man for more than eight hours on May 15, 2009.
The Grand Marais man was visiting Thompson’s wife when Thompson arrived at the home at approximately 9:15 p.m. According to statements given to Cook County Law Enforcement, Thompson tied up the man using duct tape and cable ties and did not allow him to leave the residence until 5:45 a.m. the next day. During that time, the report states that Thompson threatened the man with death and various types of bodily harm, brandishing weapons,
including a crowbar, knife, and gun. According to the report, Thompson also inflicted emotional torment on the victim by pretending to poison him.
Thompson also allegedly bound his wife and threatened and abused her with varied forms of verbal, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.
The alleged assault was reported to Cook County Law Enforcement by the male victim on May 16. After interviews, all parties expressed the desire to “go their separate ways” and not pursue legal action. However, according to County Attorney Tim Scannell that is not an option. “The decision to press charges is not left up to the victim, but to the prosecutor. If there is evidence of a crime, the state is obligated to pursue charges,” said Scannell.
Thompson has been charged with kidnapping, assault in the 2nd degree, terroristic threats, false imprisonment, and misdemeanor domestic assault. He made his initial court appearance and is out on his own recognizance. He faces a maximum penalty of up to 20 years incarceration and/ or fines of $35,000.
Thompson has no record of criminal history.
Thompson, represented by attorney Richard Holmstrom of Duluth, next appears before Judge Kenneth Sandvik at the Cook County courthouse at 10:30 a.m. on September 10, 2009.
