In April North Outdoors (northoutdoors.com) announced its 2019 list of 10 Great Active Outdoor Towns in the North, and Grand Marais was on the list.
North Outdoors’ annual Top 10 list recognizes towns that embrace and embody the northern outdoors scene. Recognized towns tend to feature an abundance of active pursuits such as hiking, paddling, cycling, and exploring, combined with a community that creates a sense of place with restaurants and retail.
The other towns on the list include Lake Placid, New York; Bayfield, Wisconsin; Hanover, New Hampshire; Portland, Maine; Whitefish, Montana; Marquette, Michigan; Bar Harbor, Maine; Ely, Minnesota; and Burlington, Vermont.
“We are thrilled to publish the updated list, recognizing some of the best places for outdoors enthusiasts to visit in the USA,” said Clay Anton, North Outdoors’ director. “These towns define the good life in the North Country, with their blend of nature, active pursuits, and great downtowns. Each has an identity that can’t be easily replicated.”
In particular, North Outdoors noted that Grand Marais provides outstanding access to both Lake Superior as well as the Boundary Waters area, in addition to excellent hiking up the Gunflint Trail and Nordic skiing in the winter. Also noted was Grand Marais’ quaint, village setting.
