The Lions District 5M-10 Midwinter Convention was held this year in Grand Rapids, Minnesota with Lions Bob and Millie Spry attending and accepting two awards presented to the Grand Marais Lions Club.
The Club was awarded a four-diamond patch for service in Youth, Vision, Hunger, and Environment, which are the four services areas for the Centennial Service Challenge. The Club also received a patch of Excellence. The Excellence awards given to 13 of the 43 clubs within the District, which covers Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Ontario.
Lion Millie also received a Certificate of Achievement and is now a certified guiding lion. Lions International is celebrating 100 years of service to the world this year and the Midwinter Convention celebrated with a birthday party. During the Friday bragging session Lion Millie promoted the Grand Marais Lions Fisherman’s Picnic. After reading a partial list of all the activities during the picnic, she invited all the Lions there to join in the fun at the next Picnic, Aug. 3-6, 2017.
Lions Club International is the world’s largest service organization of over 46,000 local clubs and more than 1.4 million members in 212 countries. Since 1917 it has been known for its many local community service projects. Lions Clubs support programs throughout the world having to do with vision and hearing loss, diabetes research, youth development, Special Olympics and disaster relief.
