The Grand Marais Lions and Lioness clubs gathered at the Grand Portage Lodge for their charter night dinner and to celebrate the 60th birthday of the Lions. Our District Governor Val Martindal along with her husband and several other Canadian guests were in attendance.
Judy Siegle was presented with the honor of “Lioness of the Year” for her “extra mile” attention to projects such as the scholarship award to a Cook County High School senior and to our pecan fundraiser.
Past District Governor Walt Mianowski took reservations (and money) for the event and arranged for a bus to Grand Portage. Sid Backlund, a very generous donor of Sven & Ole’s facilities, assisted him.
The event was overseen by new Lioness member Billi Carlson, events planner at Grand Portage. She did a great job and we had a wonderful meal and accommodations.
The two clubs have a wonderful time together at their joint events in June and December. Some of the Lioness members have become associate members of the Lions Club to help increase the numbers for the club. This is one way we work together for the good of the community and the greater world.
Both clubs are currently thinking and planning for the upcoming Fisherman’s Picnic, scheduled for August 2 – 5. The kick-off to the Picnic is the Lioness Buffet and Silent Auction, held on Wednesday evening, August 1. This is the Lionesses’ largest fundraiser and should not be missed. Mary McElevey will once again be coordinating to make sure that this event is well worth the anticipation.
Both the Lions and Lioness clubs are encouraging people to join them. The mission statement of the Lions is: To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions Club.
The Lioness mission is: To empower and support local nonprofit community organizations through financial and altruistic services. Cook County school projects and scholarship is the largest recipient of Lioness donations.
