Grand Marais Lions appoint new board members

Following tradition, a Grand Marais Lions Club steak fry followed the Fisherman’s Picnic celebration. In addition to relaxing after the hectic festival weekend, the Lions Club inducted new board members and officers on August 24.

On the 2016-17 Grand Marais Lions Club board are president Mike Carlson; 1st vice president Cheryl Woodward; 2nd vice president and tail twister Gene Erickson; 3rd vice president Rob Hackett; Millie Spry, secretary; Bob Spry, treasurer; board members Barb Backlund, Pete Kavanaugh, Darold Rosbacka, Ken Wielinski, and lion tamer Randy Woodward.

Immediate past Lions Club president Bob Spry and sponsor Millie Spry also welcomed new Lion Katie Viren.

The mission statement of the Lions is: To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions Club.

To that end, the Grand Marais Lions Club sponsors the annual Fisherman’s Picnic; gives a scholarship each year to one male and one female Cook County High School graduate; contributes to numerous health and youth programs, such as the CCHS band trip, Cook County Girl Scout activities, CCHS baseball, vision screening support and much more.
