The Grand Marais Public Library has been rated by the 2010 Hennen’s American Public Library Ratings (HAPLR) as ninth in the top 10 of its respective population category of 1,000 to 1,499.
Four other Minnesota libraries were also named: Hennepin County (500,000 or more); Ramsey County (100,000- 249,999); Runals Memorial Library in Edgerton, third (1,000-1,499) and Browns Valley Public Library, second (under 1,000).
HAPLR is a 10-year ranking system devised and published by Thomas Hennen, Wausheka County (Wisconsin) Federated Library System director. He ranks public libraries based on 15 selected measurements such as expenditure per capita, circulation per capita and visits per capita. The measurements are obtained from Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS) data collected annually from the 50 state library agencies. The 2010 rankings are based on 2007 library data, the most recent available from IMLS.
The HAPLR system does not simply develop scores for libraries, but also offers a variety of reports to libraries that compare their performance to comparably sized libraries in their state and the nation. Over the years, thousands of libraries have used standard or specialized reports to evaluate current operations and chart future courses of action.
When rating systems place a library highly, the hope is that library users will find it an exceptional place to visit. The Grand Marais Library Board and staff strive to make sure library users in Grand Marais have a great time at the library and get the information they need, said Linda Chappell, director.
