Grand Marais Public Library once again achieved a five star ranking in the annual Library Journal Star Libraries standings. Joining Grand Marais this year are Ely with four stars and Baudette with three stars, giving the Arrowhead Library System three of only five libraries in the state to achieve this benchmark.
Grand Marais has been ranked a five star library for 10 years running, one of only 13 libraries in the nation to do so.
The Library Journal star rankings are based upon user metrics such as the number of items that circulate, the number of people who visit the library, and the number of uses of computers in the library, all relative to the base population of the community.
“While there are a variety of factors that help boost those numbers in Grand Marais, the base reason the library is highly rated is that this is a community that truly values its library,” said Steve Harsin, library director.
The timing of this announcement by Library Journal is a happy coincidence with the release of the library’s new strategic plan that can be found on the library website under the About the Library tab, in the section Library Policies. Alternatively, interested parties may inquire at the library.
Also recently adopted by the library are a new mission statement: The Grand Marais Public Library increases knowledge, inspires creativity, removes barriers, and builds community across Cook County. This mission statement is accompanied by a new tag line that provides an abbreviated version of the mission: Explore. Learn. Create. Connect.
