Grand Marais Garden Club forgets snow, thinks flowers

Through the winter the Grand Marais Garden Club continues to meet to talk about flowers and to make future plans. One of the nicest events hosted by the Garden Club is an annual Flower Show. One of the lovely displays from years past is this hummingbird bouquet by Emma Bradley.

The Grand Marais Garden Club meets at the Cook County Senior Center monthly from April to December with programs of interest. At the November gathering, member Linda Quick demonstrated arrangements for the holiday table.

Before retiring, Linda worked some 30 years for the renowned multipurpose gardening center Bachman’s. She shared some of the things she learned while working in their design room. Ten small arrangements were shared by lucky members.

Projects initiated or managed by the Garden Club throughout the community include the memorial rose garden, flower boxes in the downtown area, an annual flower show in July, assisting with Harbor Park, etc.

In 2014 Garden Club President Frankie Jarchow applied for and received a “Great Place” grant resulting in the new First Street park between South of the Border Café and Buck’s Hardware Hank.

Membership in the Garden Club is open to all and guests are always welcome. For more information about the Garden Club, contact Frankie Jarchow at 387-2943.
