Grand Marais Garden Club hosted its annual flower show on Saturday, July 27 at the Cook County Community Center and it drew an appreciative crowd of curious onlookers and aficionados of good food that was served at the show.
This year’s theme, Veggies and Flowers, led to some of the most interesting, imaginative and artistic displays seen in years.
Some of the vegetables (and other plants) used in the creative flower arrangements were yarrow, garlic, grass, cabbage, carrots, cattails, clover, cucumbers, creeping thyme, clover, celery, asparagus, rhubarb, oregano, fireweed, sedum, yarrow, pineapple weed, parsley, potato, pearly everlasting, veronica, dill, radishes, zucchini, kohlrabi, broccoli leaf, bell peppers, bells of Ireland, walking onions, Joe Pye-weed, and more.
There were free recipe cards for rhubarb punch made by the late Violet “Vi” Rindahl that used to be served at the flower shows, as well as a memorial for Kay Levitan, Vi Rindahl, and Loretta “Honey” Rosen, all members who gave a lot to the Garden Club and are missed but not forgotten.
