Through 75 Summers, Flowers Bloom in Many Ways is the theme for this year’s annual Grand Marais Garden Club flower show. Members will create arrangements depicting the history of the club.
Co-chairpersons of the event are Donna Clothier, Skip Joynes and Evelyn McDonald.
The popular flower show, where friends and flowers meet, will be held at the Cook County Community Center on Friday, July 17 from noon until 5 p.m. A special silver tea will be served until 4 p.m.
The Grand Marais Garden Club was formed in 1934 by a group of 19 women headed by Frances Fenstad, first president. The club’s purpose was village beautification, making the city of Grand Marais “worthy of its beautiful setting.”
One of the first goals was the creation of a garbage dump. Paul Backlund created a dumping ground on his land where people could haul garbage themselves, or he would haul their garbage at 25 cents a load.
Thusthe Grand Marais Garden Club was formed and remains the longestserving organization in our county.
