On a hot day after a hard day’s work there’s nothing much better than an Orange Julius to quench one’s thirst. Trouble was, in the past, one had to drive to Duluth or Thunder Bay to find this sweet concoction. But not anymore.
“The Dairy Queen franchise added this to the menu, and we’re pleased to offer it to the public here in the county,” said Grand Marais Dairy Queen Manager Rob Hackett.
Also new is the Blizzard in a Waffle Cone, Turkey Wraps, Premium Fruit Smoothies and a $5 locals’ lunch special.
“We are going to take the lunch special sign down soon but we will continue to offer the $5 meals to locals,” said Hackett, adding, “We’re here for everybody, but the locals are here for us year round and we want to honor that commitment.”
Frozen Dairy Queen cakes are still a staple at the store, but with a new twist. “We are now offering an online cake service. If you can’t find the cake you want in the store already made, we will make the cake that you find online,” Hackett said.
Currently the Dairy Queen is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. but the hours will expand in the summer, said Hackett, as the county fills with vacationers.
Some other changes have occurred at the DQ. Inside, at the order counter there is a new wall with a flat screen TV mounted on it. Playing right now is the documentary Rendezvous with History about Grand Portage. It can be watched while one waits for an order. But the wait is never long; meals and treats take little time to make and are delivered with a smile.
“We have a good staff that are conscientious and friendly. Come in and meet them and check out the store,” said Hackett.
