The Grand Marais gardens are coming back to life. After years of little upkeep, a group of like-minded people are putting their efforts and skills together to make the rain gardens look nice, and able to perform their main function.
The re-establishment of the Grand Marais community rain gardens is a cooperative project between our local MN Power and Light Interfaith group, Rooted and Rising Congregational Church climate group, CCLEP, Grand Marais Parks and Recreation, Cook County Soil and Water and concerned individuals from the community.
They meet most Monday evenings at 5p.m. to work on the gardens.
The groups are partnering to combat the effects of climate change by re-establishing the rain gardens that serve to capture water from heavy rains and bring it into the soil instead of flowing into sewer systems or Lake Superior. The effort included an educational zoom on the benefits and mechanics of rain gardens. So far, the group has weeded and replanted the rain garden by the library and have now begun working on the rain garden by Highway 61.
