Grand Marais City Councilors held their last meeting of the year on December 28 to set the final levy for the year, collectible in 2023 upon the taxable property in the City of Grand Marais for the following purposes: Revenue $748,995.88; PFA Water 2004 $34,703.79; G.O. Refunding EDA 2019A $59,430.00; G.O. Refunding 2021A $84,718.50 for a total of $1,046,936.08.
When the ten-minute meeting ended, the levy was set at 2.7 percent for next year.
Council also passed a resolution approving the Cook County Snowmobile Club’s application to conduct lawful gambling at the Birch Terrace Supper Club Lounge and Up Yonder, the previous Harbor Light Supper Club.
Next time the council meets, counselor Tracy Benson will be sworn in as the new Mayor of Grand Marais. She will replace Jay Decoux, who opted not to run again after serving as mayor since 2014.
No one ran against Tracy in the general election.
Two new council members will be added to the mix, Benjamin (Ben) Peters and Aaron Carlson. They will replace Benson and Anton Moody, who chose not to run again.
Benson thanked both Anton Moody and Jay for their time on the council, and City Communication’s Director Patrick Knight presented each with a “City Tin” coupons for local businesses who’s sale helps support WTIP radio.
“I think I will miss being part of the process, but I won’t be far from it,” said Decoux. Anton said he would also miss serving on the council and added that he thought the city staff had done an excellent job. Decoux echoed that sentiment, saying he was really grateful to have staff available to answer questions and help him when asked during his eight years of service to the community.
