U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will open the inspection station at Grand Marais for the summer tourist season on May 26. Starting on that date, hours of operation for the station at Grand Marais will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week.
The Grand Marais border station is located within the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Grand Marais. This border station serves individuals arriving from Canada via small boat in the Gunflint Trail area. There are no roads into or out of Canada in this remote wilderness area. In addition, vessels arriving via Lake Superior at the Grand Marais harbor must call the Grand Marais station to report arrival and arrange for inspection.
The Grand Marais station also services the Cook County Airport and a sea plane base located on Devil Track Lake. Applications for the I-68 permit can be made in person at the Grand Marais border station during normal business hours or at the Grand Portage Port of Entry. The I-68 permit allows boaters to enter the United States from Canada for recreational purposes and report their arrival to CBP from a telephone at the earliest opportunity.
