Grand Marais can do better than porta-potties

The small tourist towns up north have changed in many ways over the course of my 60-plus years of driving the North Shore. Some good, some not so good.

One of the big changes happens to be the items available for “souvenirs.” The cheap trinkets have been replaced by one-of-a-kind keepsakes, unique crafted jewelry and lovely elegant clothing.

The shopper of today expects more than a portable john or searching out someplace that has a restroom open to the public. Has anyone ever said, “I just want to freshen up a bit?” A central location such as the old theater area could house a “state of the art” clean, well-stocked public restroom. An attendant on weekends could ensure cleanliness and maintain stocking items. Our town should feel proud to reflect the high standards that families appreciate in the modern up north tourist destination. We need to respect our visitors!

Easy to reach, well maintained restrooms would make downtown Grand Marais more relaxing and conducive to investigating what is tucked away in its many shops. Folks, toss this idea around — public restrooms in the old theater area. And a bench or two to sit and wait for our partner would be nice as well. Money well spent!
