In the mid-1960s the Grand Marais Art Colony was a great place for kids to pay an unplanned summer visit. Birney Quick and Byron Bradley were pleasant, happy to let kids in and view what was going on.

Quick, who was the first director, and Bradley, who came on board in 1954 first an instructor and then, in 1959 as co-director with Quick, were great ambassadors of the Art Colony. Each in his own way made art approachable, engaging, and enjoyable even for those not inclined with any real talent but just curious to view art being made in the converted church building.

Unplanned visits by little village scamps were always greeted with aplomb and grace.

Fast forward to today. The Grand Marais Art Colony is getting set to hold its 70th birthday bash on Saturday, December 9 at 7 p.m. at the Art Colony. Everyone is invited to attend.

A lot has transpired since the days of Birney Quick and Byron Bradley. Come to the party and celebrate what these two men—and others—began so long ago. And come to celebrate what is happening today, and is planned for the future.
