In his address on Sunday, March 15, Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz announced he was closing all of the state’s school districts starting March 18, 2020 through March 30, 2020.
For students at I.S.D. 166, it will mean they will miss five school days that will now be taught online. The district had scheduled spring break for the week of March 23-27 so kids were scheduled to be out of the building at that time.
On Monday, March 16 and March 17 the teachers worked with students on distant learning so school could continue in some fashion during the time away from the campus. Teachers were available on Wednesday and Thursday via Google Classrooms to start online work.
During the week prior to the governor’s announcement, the school district had been following the recommendations provided by the Minnesota Health Department (MDH) regarding the COVID- 19. Teachers worked with kids on the importance of sanitizing surfaces throughout the day and educated them on the importance of washing their hands and covering their coughs and sneezes.
In a statement to the public, I.S.D. 166 Superintendent Dr. Bill Crandall said, “The health and safety of our students and staff are a top priority and we will continue to work with families to provide educational activities for our students through electronic or distant learning activities. Our teachers have been working on this delivery model and will be ready to work with students during this time. As a district, we will be looking at how to continue to provide meals for students. We will be working with our food service staff on our method of delivery during the time of school closure.”
“We are in close contact with the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and continue to make plans through this evolving situation. Please keep in mind that our school district will follow the recommendations from MDH and could change at any time. The district will continue to communicate with families via email, phone, texts using InfiniteCampus, the school website: https:// www.cookcountyschools.org WTIP, Boreal, Instagram, Facebook, and the district app.”
