Last night, May 14, we reached the end of a long, hard journey. At 5 p.m., I signed the freedom to marry into law. We woke up today to a fairer and more just Minnesota.
Thank you for refusing to give up on it. Because of you, last November we defeated a very destructive constitutional amendment that would have forever banned marriage equality.
Not only that, but you elected legislators in the House and Senate who would support us in our efforts to move Minnesota forward.
Oftentimes, the things for which we have to fight hardest are the ones that mean the most. That is the case today for all the same-sex couples and their families who now share in a fundamental right: the ability to marry the person they love.
I am so proud of Minnesota and Minnesotans. There is no greater calling than ensuring equality.
We’re going to keep working hard for the rest of this session to make our state better. We’re going to make sure all our children can dream of a bright future and set out to achieve it.
On marriage equality, I’m excited to say again: We did it.
