Governor calls for pause on youth sports, shuts down bars, restaurants, and fitness centers for one month

Citing the dramatic surge in COVID-19 cases throughout the state, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced on Wednesday, November 18, that he was ordering bars, restaurants, gyms and fitness centers to close to the public for four weeks. Restaurants and bars will be allowed to offer takeout during this time. The restrictions start on Friday, November 20.

Governor Walz also called for a temporary halt for youth sports over the shutdown.

Hospitals across the state are near capacity with COVID-19 patients occupying inpatient beds. On Tuesday, November 17, the state reported 26 new COVID-19 related deaths and 5,945 new COVID-19 cases. Of those, 1,669 coronavirus infected people were occupying hospital beds and of those, 346 needed intensive care.

In Cook County, coronavirus cases continue to climb. On Tuesday the county Coronavirus Response Hub reported six new cases over the last five days. The cases include females in their thirties and under age ten, males in their 80s, 60s, 30s and 20s. That brings the counties total number to 46 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic. Cook County had seven total cases through September, and then the surge began.
