Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton recently appointed Grand Marais resident Mark Sandbo to the Minnesota Lake Superior Coastal Program’s (MLSCP) Governor’s Council.
The one-year appointment was effective October 30, 2013, and will run to January 4, 2014, but, as Sandbo stated, “I have been told that I will be reappointed once my first year is up.”
Sandbo joins Hovland resident Kek Melby and Tofte resident James “Jim” King on the 15-member board. Mark replaces the late (and greatly missed) Cook County Commissioner Jim Johnson on the council.
The Governor’s Council is made up of 15 individuals from the coastal area of Carlton, Cook, Lake and St. Louis counties as well as several individuals from throughout the state.
Coastal Council members recommend projects for funding and evaluate Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program’s performance. The council makes recommendations to the commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on grant priorities, projects to receive grant funding, and on the administrative annual budget.
According to its website, the goal of the Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program is to, “Preserve, protect, develop and where possible restore or enhance coastal resources along Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior.”
Sandbo is a former mayor of Grand Marais and current Cook County/Grand Marais Economic Development Authority (EDA) board chairman. He is also a member of the Grand Marais Lions Club and has long been active in local politics.
