I found the January 3 article by Rhonda Silence YMCA finishes year with budget on target, among the most informative to appear in your paper. Thank you.
Interestingly, we learn that “A lot is planned for the YMCA… expanded childcare options with day-care services starting January 5…” Coupling this with the intent of ISD 166 to “invest” a great deal of money in preschool and daycare it is clear that we now have two taxpayer-funded entities, the Y and the school district, intent on providing duplicative services that will compete directly with private sector businesses, i.e., daycare.
This is but a continuation of previous conflicts with privately operated gym facilities.
I have absolutely no problem with tax money being used to support legitimate governmental functions, e.g., police and fire protection, road and bridge maintenance, ambulance service, etc. However, I draw the line at governmental involvement in recreational facilities and competing with private sector businesses. The latter issue is particularly important since entrepreneurs and the taxpaying public are forced to participate in the ultimate destruction of those enterprises.
Clearly, it is time to stop the government funding of the Y. The approximately $220,000 shortfall thus created should be prorated among the 1,500 members, daily users, and enabling county council members, both past and present. If the Y is so vital, let the users pay for it.
