Good year for Grand Marais Municipal Pool

A total of 24,288 visitations were made to the Grand Marais Municipal Pool in 2009, 49 more than the year before. Cash receipts were $65,688.27, up 8.5% over the year before. Walk-in income was $33,931, up $2,673 over 2008, and ticket sales were $7,980, up $1,158 over 2008.

At a Tuesday, January 5, 2010 park board meeting, Head Lifeguard Charles Christiansen attributed the growth in walk-in revenue to a $1 increase for campground guest admission.

Membership income was down by over $400. This time of year, Christiansen said, memberships and lap swimmers are keeping the pool open. He said more people are swimming laps these days than they used to. He would also like to see more kids use the pool, he said.

Park Manager Tersteeg said the pool is seeing a little more out-of-town use and a little less local use. The county’s one-third share of the pool’s 2009 operating loss will be a great help, he said.

The pool still has openings for preschool swimming lessons that will take place this month. The sauna benches will be replaced Monday, January 11, a one-day job that needs to be done every four or five years, Christiansen said. Closure for spring cleaning is planned for the end of March, but it won’t be the same week as Easter break, he said.
