The Tofte Trek 10K was once again a muddy affair for the nearly 200 runners and walkers that took to the trails on July 4, 2014. It was a bit warm for runners and walkers, but perfect for spectators who watched the start and finish at the Birch Grove Community Center.

The event is a great deal of fun and includes a lot of good sportsmanship. A wrong turn on the children’s 1-mile run sent a number of youths on a longer run. The young runners didn’t seem to care, they returned to the finish line at Birch Grove all smiles, to congratulations for completing “the longest 1-mile ever.”

The friendly competition between oft-time Tofte Trek winner Adam Swank of Duluth and the rest of the men’s field continued this year. Swank was bumped from the first place finish by Dan Schwamberger of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Schwamberger finished in 38:26.6, with Swank (AKA Lou Stoolz) seconds behind in 38:53.6.

The top local male was Drew Holmen of Grand Marais who came in at 39.00.8.

Two local runners, bare chested Drew Holman and Kieran Scannell (656) finished 3rd and 5th place in the field of almost 200 runners.
