For the first time ever, Cook County High School was unable to field any high school varsity racers in the January 30 running of the Cook County Invitational Freestyle/Classic Pursuit Nordic ski meet held January 30 at Pincushion Mountain. However, several younger skiers participated in junior high and junior varsity races, representing the school well.

Nine boys’ and nine girls’ teams competed in varsity competition.

Mesabi East girls placed first with 369 points, just nipping a strong Duluth East girls’ squad by two points. Duluth East’s deep boys’ team finished with 378 points, six points ahead of Mesabi East to take the boys’ title.

Boy and girl varsity racers skied 5.3 K freestyle and 5.6 K classic style races, combining the times to determine a winner. Anna Johnson of Mesabi East won the girls’ title in 39 minute 59 seconds while her teammate Reed Melicher won the boys’ title with a combined time of 33:37. Reed was 44 seconds ahead of Duluth East’s Keaton Long.

Meanwhile, Cook County had several skiers competing in junior varsity or junior high races.

Robin Henrikson placed 8th in a very deep, very competitive 2.8 K junior high girls’ race. Her time for the distance was 13:48.

Kestrel Pollock placed 28th in the boys’ junior high race with a time of 17:05 for the 2.8 K race.

Lucy Callender led CCHS girls in the 5.3 K junior varsity race Staff photo/Laurie Johnson with her 23rd place. Lucy finished in 31 minutes and 59 seconds.

Brenna Hay was close behind, placing 25th overall in 34:21 and her sister, Marin Hay, placed 27th with a time of 36:28.

Three former Cook County High School students, Joe Rauzi, now skiing for Duluth East; Will Seaton, skiing independently; and Pete Summers, racing for Duluth Marshall, also raced well. Rauzi finished 10th, Seaton 30th and Summers 54th in the boys’ varsity
