Good News (its free)— Bad News (you may lose this refund)

This year, over 600 families who live and work in Cook County used our free tax service to file federal and state tax returns to get tax refunds. The IRS software used by the Tax Aide Volunteers, also generates and files property tax and rent refunds for the 200-plus families who were eligible for a total of more than $80,000.

The bad news is that there are over 400 eligible single persons or families who did not know, or did not file for these refunds.

Many from this group use Turbo-Tax, or other free software, which cannot create and file the property and rent forms required by Minnesota to obtain a family’s refund.

Tax season closed April 18 but you have until July to file for property tax refunds.

The Cook County Tax Aide Volunteers will continue to help the elderly and low/moderate income members of our community with their federal, state, property and rent refunds if they will just call Steve (387-1767), Chuck (475-2776) or Diane (387-3015) for a few more weeks. Please do not miss out on your refunds – our service is confidential and free. And if you have already filed your federal return, please give us a copy and we can still e-file your rent or property tax refund.
