Good hitting, but three losses for Viking softball

In mid-flight, senior Jami Sjogren, No. 6, gave it her all but couldn’t quite beat the throw to first base. The Vikings have lost their last three games but hope to turn it around this week in games against Esko at Esko and Ely, who they play at home on Saturday, May 2 at noon at the Rec Park.

The Cook County softball team fell to the Two Harbors Agates 14-5 on Thursday, April 23 in a game played at home.

Two Harbors scored three runs in the second inning and six runs in the third inning to take a 9-1 lead. The Vikings scored one run in the second and three runs in the fourth but Two Harbors added four runs of its own in that inning to crush the Vikings’ hopes of a comeback.

“The girls fielded well, played good defense; we had one overthrow but otherwise it was just the case of Two Harbors hitting really well,” said Viking Head Coach Jessie Anderson.

“Our girls also hit well. In fact their head coach came and talked to me after the game and said we are the best hitting team they have faced this year,” said Coach Anderson.

Leading the Vikings at the plate was senior Carrie Palmer who had two hits and one RBI. Maddy Roy had one hit and drove in three RBIs while Jami Sjogren also had a hit and drove in a run.

The Vikings' backstop Maddy Roy calls for the pitch from Alex Slanga. As the catcher, Roy is like the quarterback of the team. In addition to defense, Roy also leads the team with her bat.

In fact, every Viking who played got one hit in the game—Alex Slanga, Abby Prom, Hannah VanderHeiden, Alyssa Spry, Bethany Derscheid, and Trace McQuatters.

Vikings trumped by Silver Bay

The Vikings traveled to Silver Bay on Monday, April 27 and fell 12-4 to the Mariners.

“We made a lot of errors in the game, especially early,” said Coach Anderson.

Alex Slanga took the loss, but she didn’t pitch badly, said Anderson. “We just couldn’t field the ball. It was as if we were playing for the first time this year. That’s the way it is when we play the Mariners. We either play them really well or we’re just awful.”

The Mariners went up 7-0 in the first inning and tacked on one run in the fourth and one run in the fifth and added three more in the sixth.

Palmer, Sjogren, Prom, VanderHeiden and Roy had hits for the Vikings.

Vikings lose to Barnum

Down 8-0 after one inning, it looked like it was going to be a short night for the Vikings. If a team is down by 10 or more runs at the end of the 5th inning, the game is called.

But with their fans cheering them on, the Vikings made a strong comeback and nearly beat the Barnum Bombers, falling just short 12-11 in a game played on April 28 at the Rec Park.

The Vikings batted last and ended with a strike out, a ground out to the pitcher and a ground out to first base.

“Our defense was really sloppy,” said Coach Anderson. “If we could have made some plays in the field we could have taken this game. We also had one bad base running error in the sixth inning that hurt us. Once again the girls hit really well. They fought back but we came up just a little bit short.”

Roy was outstanding with her bat going 4-4 with one double. Prom, Sjogren, Palmer each went 2-4 at the plate.

Next up for the Vikings is Esko at Esko before they come home to face Ely at the Rec Park on Saturday, May 2. The game starts at noon. Come out and cheer on your Vikings!
