Glorious day for Tofte Trek 10K

Saturday, July 4th was a beautiful day for a trail run, and that’s what more than 175 people elected to do when they participated in the 36th annual Tofte Trek 10K.

Kyle Smith of Silver Bay comfortably led all finishers across the line with a time of 40:16, finishing more than a minute ahead of his nearest competitor, Kieran Scannell of Grand Marais. Kaelyn Williams of Golden Valley was the top female finisher with a time of 46:31.

Scannell nudged Thomas Fagin of Tofte for second place. Fagin finished with a time of 41:24. Jesse Baldwin, Grand Marais, ran to fourth place with a fine time of 41:34.

Other top local male finishers and their time and place include: Joey Chmelik, 8th, 45:13; William Surbaugh, 12th, 48:44; Ben Seaton, 13, 48:49; Jim Joynes, 24th, in 53:51; Lucean Apetrei, 25th, 53:59; Elliot Noyce Doherty, 41st, 58:00; Cory Belt, 42nd, 58:55; Will Ramberg, 43rd, 59:06; Jeff Hicken, 64th, 1:03:33; Steve Ramberg, 65th, 1:03:43; Andy Kern, 66th, 1:04:21; Dennis Fitzpatrick, 100, 1:22: 12.

Shanie Hahn placed 6th in the women’s field with a time of 58:50 to lead local women. Jen Barrett placed 8th in 1:01:02 while Carla Hill was 12th in 1:03:09. Louise Ramberg was 15th in 1:03:39, Molly Wickwire 22 in 1:07:27; McKay Carl, 39th in 1:16:44; Brandi Erickson, 48th, 1:21:34; and Joan Ferry, 58th, 1:35:20.

10K Race Walk

The field of people who are entering the 10K race walk gets bigger and better every year. This year 33 women and 11 men took part in walking the hilly, rigorous course.

Ellen Anderson of Tofte led all race walkers across the line, finishing in 1:20:17 to beat the top men’s finisher by over three minutes.

Walt Jungbauer of Stillwater won the men’s 10K race walk with a time of 1:23:27. Top local men included Jokubas Svambaris, 7th, 1:37:12; Bill Blank, 8th, 1:41:07; Eljer Lorenzon, 1:41:07.

Jolite Rysdahl of Tofte was 3rd at 1:31:43. In 10th place for women was Jenny Delfs in 1:36:23 while Kathy Horne was 15th in 1:41:28. Nicole Bockovich and Rhonda Silence finished together in 20-21st with the same time of 1:51:30 while Emma and Clair Nalezny finished together in 22nd and 23rd in 1:52:22. Mary Hicken and Molly Hicken also finished together in 24th and 25th in 1:57:10.

 

 

Age Groups

Jim Joynes placed 1st in the men’s 50-59 age group and Shanie Hahn placed first in the women’s 40-49 age group. Jen Barrett placed second in the 40-49 women’s age group while William Surbaugh placed 3rd in the boys’ 18 and under division. Louise Ramberg placed second and Brandi Erickson placed 5th in the 18 and under girls’ division. Kieran Scannell and Thomas Fagin placed second and third in the 19-29 age group. Joan Ferry placed second in the 6-60 women’s age group.

Overall it appeared that the runners and walkers had a wonderful, muddy, wilderness trek!
