Give it a try

What is it about us Christians? Whatever church I am in there seems to be some kind of hesitancy for committed members to tell others about who we are and what we are about.

I know that when I go to a great restaurant, I make sure I tell my friends. I don’t usually think “Maybe they don’t like Australian food” or “I wonder if they want to be in a restaurant that makes you feel like you really are special.” I simply let them know what my experience was there and how cute the servers in kangaroo costumes were.

When I find a hairdresser I really like I rave about their ability to do magic on my head. I don’t think, “No one else would really want someone that good doing anything with their hair” or “Maybe I am being too personal talking about how great my hairdresser is.” Nope, I just blurt it out: “You too could feel like a queen coming out of her shop.”

So why do we not talk about the church that is committed to making this a gentler and safer world? Why don’t we talk about the choir that touches our hearts with words and music that keep us singing throughout the week? Why don’t we talk about our fellowship gatherings, the meals that bring us together? Why aren’t we talking about the church that believes its mission is our way of making hope a possibility? Not only that…we are caring and loving and fun…. but do we talk about it? Do we pass out our cards and say “Give it a try, you may like it…”?

If you have ever seen a peacock you know that it is an exceptionally pretty bird when it fans its tail feathers for everyone to see. But a peacock that sits on its tail feathers is just another turkey.

Just something to think about.

Each month a member of the Cook County Ministerium will offer Spiritual Reflections. This week our contributor is Pastor EvaLyn Carlson of the First Congregational1/2011 Church, United Church of Christ.
