CCHS sophomore Olya Wright had a breakout race at the Polar League cross country championship race held at Pincushion Mountains on Tuesday, October12. Wright took a slight lead on the last big hill and extended it over Addison Burhardt of South Ridge by 19 seconds to take her first cross country running victory and the Pola League championship individual title. Wright’s time for the hilly trail 5k race was 20:46.9.
Stacking the top ten for the North Shore Storm was Autumn Smith who took third, Lamar Gordon sixth, Anna Hay eighth and Jocelyn Carr took ninth. In 15th place, London Smith was the team’s sixth runner, and Trinity Giddings placed 17th.
Each team’s top five runners’ places are totaled up for a team score.
The North Shore Storm girls’ team easily outdistanced their competition, scoring a low point total of 26. Second place was South Ridge (62), Carlton-Wrenshall (77), Moose Lake/Willow River/ Barnum (94) and Esko (100).
The top ten finishers each earned a medal and all-conference honors.
Boys
Nate Bilben led the boys’ cross country team with a fourth-place finish. Nate’s time was 17:54. The race was won by Cromwell’s Noah Foster in 16.41.5.
Other North Shore Storm finishers were Ian Thorpe in ninth, Clay Thorpe 13th, Elijah Smith 19th, Kyler Hanson 20th, Brayden Schmidt 24th, and Cyrus Myers placed 33rd.
The boy’s placed second in the varsity team competition, which was won by Esko, who had 40 points to 56 for the North Shore Storm. Moose Lake Willow River/Barnum (67), South Ridge (68) and Carlton Wrenshall (122) rounded out the team scoring.
