The Cook County High School Girls’ Tennis Team traveled to Virginia, MN to play a tough Eveleth-Gilbert tennis team for a sub-section match, Thursday, Oct. 7. Four of the five individual tennis matches were played indoors at a nice four-court indoor tennis facility in Virginia. Playing indoors was a new experience for the Cook County girls and they enjoyed it very much. This tennis facility also had six nice outdoor courts.

Libby Zafftwas the only Cook County winner, winning a marathon match at #4 Singles. Libby’s match lasted three hours and 15 minutes before she finally defeated Shelly Benson (E-G), 6-7 (2), 6-1, 7-6 (3). Libby exhibited a lot of determination, concentration and patience, during her match, as well as, an improvement in her tennis skills.

At #1 Singles, Shelby Ahrendt (Cook County) lost to Audra Harvey (E-G), 6-0,6-1.

At #2 Singles, Cecilia Schnobrich (Cook County) lost to Lexi Brascugli (E-G), 6-0,6-0.

At #1 Doubles, Audrey Summers and Brenna Hay (Cook County) lost to Casey Sopp and Amy Terrio (E-G), 6-0,6-1.

The Cook County team had to forfeit the #2 and #3 doubles matches because they didn’t have enough players. The final team score was Eveleth-Gilbert 6, Cook County 1.

Coach Muus was encouraged by the fact that most of the Cook County girls were just as skilled as the Eveleth-Gilbert tennis players they competed against, but the lack of match play experience and patience was evident in most of their play. Thisexperience will come as the girls play more matches in the future.

At press time, the girls’ tennis team was traveling to Virginia, Wed., Oct. 13, for individual (2 singles, 2 doubles) subsection competition.
