The Cook County High School girls’ varsity tennis team traveled to Hermantown High School to compete against the Hawks on Sept. 20. It was a cold and windy day, but the Viking girls were excited to play their third match of the season.
At #1 singles, Shelby Ahrendt (Cook County) lost a hard fought match to DJ Nelson (Hermantown), 6-3,7-5. Shelby came back in the second set after being down 4-1 to go ahead 5-4, but her opponent finished strong to capture the match.
At #2 singles, Molly Zafft (Cook County) was on the winning side of a close match, defeating Isabelle Dougherty (Hermantown), 6-4,7-6 (4).
At #3 singles, Cecilia Schnobrich (Cook County) breezed through her match, defeating Hannah Peterson (Hermantown), 6-1,6-1.
At #4 singles, Libby Zafft (Cook County) kept her undefeated record intact by defeating Mariah Ruhanen (Hermantown), 6-2,6-2.
At #1 doubles, Brenna Hay and Audrey Summers (Cook County) lost to Anna Van Deelen and Madelyn Miller (Hermantown), 6-0,6-1, but gained some valuable playing experience.
The Cook County Vikings had to forfeit two doubles matches because they didn’t have enough players, so in the final team score Hermantown edged out the Viking team 4 – 3.
The next scheduled match for the girls’ tennis team is Monday, Oct. 4 at home, 3:30 p.m., against a Duluth Central-Denfeld team they played earlier in the season. Come cheer the girls on to their first victory!
