Girls’ tennis team captures first victory

The Cook County High School girls’ tennis team captured its first varsity tennis match Monday, Oct. 4, in front of an excited group of home fans at the Grand Marais public tennis courts. The Duluth Central coach agreed to just count the matches played (4 singles, 1 doubles) toward the team scoring. The Vikings came out on top on this beautiful day, defeating Duluth Central, 3-2.

At #1 Singles, Shelby Ahrendt (Cook County) defeated Naomi Robinson (Duluth Central), 6-2, 6-3.

At #2 Singles, Cecilia Schnobrich (Cook County) defeated Tiffany Klemmack (Duluth Central), 6-1, 6-0.

At #3 Singles, Molly Zafft (Cook County) defeated Liesa Erickson (Duluth Central), 6-4, 6-2.

At #4 Singles, Mya Peterson (Duluth Central) defeated Libby Zafft (Cook County) in a close match, 7-5, 6-4.

In the doubles match, Olivia Kinzinger and Madria Lehto (Duluth Central) defeated Audrey Summers and Brenna Hay (Cook County), 6-0, 6-2.

The Vikings ended their first regular season with a 1-3 record. They were competitive in every match they played, having to forfeit three points in their first two matches, playing with five girls, and forfeiting two points in their next match, playing with six girls. Overall, the Vikings won over half of the individual matches that they played. They hope to have more girls joining the tennis team next year. A minimum of 10 girls is needed to play all of the events (4 singles, 3 doubles) in a MSHSL tennis match.

The CCHS girls’ tennis team traveled to Virginia MN, on Thursday, Oct. 7, to compete against Eveleth-Gilbert in a sub-section match. Theywill also be traveling to Virginia, Oct. 13 for sub-section individual competition (two singles, two doubles). Let’s go Vikes!
