The Cook County High School girls’ tennis team concluded their first varsity season by participating in the Region 7A North sub-section individual competition, held at Virginia, MN, on Wednesday, Oct. 13. Six teams (Virginia, Aitkin, Eveleth-Gilbert, Crosby-Ironton, Duluth Marshall, and Cook County) were supposed to have two singles players and two doubles teams compete in this sub-section meet. Cook County had only one singles player, instead of two, because one of our players was running in the conference cross-country meet, the same day.
The tennis coaches from all of these schools met before the tennis meet and seeded all of the players before placing them in a singles bracket and doubles bracket. The Vikings’ limited schedule of matches (5) hurt them in the seeding process because they only played one of the teams in their sub-section and couldn’t justify being one of the top six seeds (out of 12), in singles or doubles. As a result, the Cook County girls had some tough matches to play, in the first and second rounds.
Shelby Ahrendt (Cook County) lost a tough first round singles match to Emma Stauber (Duluth Marshall), 3-6,6-3,6-0. After her hard-fought match, she rode back to Grand Marais, with her mom, to participate in the conference cross-country meet, at the Pincushion ski trails. She’s quite an athlete and competitor, in all of the sports she competes in.
Molly Zafft and Cecilia Schnobrich (Cook County) won their first round doubles match, defeating Shannon Lundgren and Jessica Lundstrom (Crosby-Ironton), 6-2,7-6 (3). In the next round (quarterfinals), they had to play the top seeded doubles team, from Virginia. They did their best and, probably, gave their opponents more competition than they expected. Amanda Arbogast and Caley Westin (Virginia) defeated Molly and Cecilia (Cook County), 6-1,6-2, on their way to winning the North subsection doubles title.
Molly and CC had a number of close games that they ended up losing, but they played at a higher level to make this match closer than the score indicates.
Libby Zafft and Brenna Hay (Cook County) were the only eighth graders in the sub-section competition and had to play a tough doubles team in the first round. They lost to Brittany Searle and Kaitlin Konsor (Aitkin), 6-1,6-0, but gained some much needed match play experience.
The girls’ tennis team had an enjoyable first season and hopes to add some more tennis players to the team, next year. They also expect to have more matches on their schedule, next year. Coach Muus and the junior tennis players would like to thank everyone who helped make this varsity tennis opportunity possible and we look forward to continued success as we continue to develop this program and gain support from our community.
Our boys’ tennis season will be in the spring and our Cook County team is going to surprise a number of people, in their first season. Any student at CCHS, or home schooled, is welcome to participate and enjoy this lifetime sport.
