Girls Take a Tough Loss to Ely



Ely jumped out to a 3-1 first inning lead in the Vikings’ home game against the Timberwolves played on a sunny May 7 Saturday.

The Timberwolves pushed across another run in the second to go up 4-1, but the Vikings blanked the Timberwolves in the fourth while putting up four runs to take a five to four lead into the fifth. Emmalli Myers and Morgan Starkey both had RBIs in the fourth inning.

With Kallie Anderson dealing strikes from the pitcher’s mound, the Vikings shut down Ely in the fourth and added another run to take a six to four lead.

Neither team scored in the fifth. Ely pushed across one run in the sixth. Going into the top of the seventh, the Vikings le 6-5. However, a single by C. Ohlhauser brought in two runs. Ely would score two more runs before the Vikings’ turn to bat came.

Ali Duclos led off in the bottom of the seventh, taking first base after being hit. Kallie Anderson hit a ground ball to the pitcher, who threw to first base for the out. Duclos advanced to second.

Katie Peck hit a hard grounder that the shortstop mishandled. Katie was safe at first and ran to second on an errant throw. Duclos scored. Amelia Brune hit the ball hard with two outs and Peck at second, but the left fielder caught it for the final out. The Vikings lost 9-7.

Kallie Anderson pitched a good game for the Vikings despite taking the loss. The eighth grader threw seven innings, allowing nine runs, seven hits and striking out nine Timberwolves.

The Vikings outhit the Timberwolves ten to seven, but Ely had seven stolen bases.

Morgan Starkey was 3-for-4 from the plate and Maggie Smith had two hits. Ali Duclos was 1-3 at the plate, Kallie Anderson was 1-3, Katie Peck was 1-4 with a hit and a walk, Charlet Waver had one hit and one walk in three plate appearances, Emmallie Myers had one hit and one walk in three at bats, and Greta Youngdahl walked once in three at bats. Amelia Brune scored one run and hit into two fielder’s choices.

Ely ended with four errors and the Vikings had three for the game.
