The Cook County girls’ softball team faced the top two teams in the Polar League conference in the past week and lost both games, but in between they beat the McGregor Mercuries 13-3 at the Grand Marais Recreation Park.

Vikes fall short to Silver Bay

The first game was played against the Silver Bay Mariners at Silver Bay on May 3. The Vikings fell 11-4 to their North Shore rivals. Silver Bay is second in the conference, right behind the Two Harbors Agates.

“We played pretty well against Silver Bay, but they are led by a couple of seniors and they just chipped away at us,” said Head Coach Jessie Anderson.

“For that game we had three triples. Ailee Larson, CeCe Schnobrich and Maddy Roy all had triples. Rachel Wieben went 2-3 at the plate and Sarissa Falk pitched pretty well, only giving up a couple of walks. We made a couple of errors, nothing game changing. Silver Bay is a good team and you have to give them credit for that,” said Anderson.

Agates pitcher intimidates

The Vikings played the Two Harbors Agates on Tuesday, May 8 at home. Their stalwart senior pitcher Madison Olson, who shut the Vikings out while her teammates provided her with 13 runs, leads the top ranked Agates.

“Sarah Deschampe had a good game against Two Harbors. We only had three hits for the game and Sarah was 2-2 at the plate. Sarissa also had a hit. Their pitcher is good, but like a lot of teams I think we give her too much respect. She’s fast but her ball doesn’t really break. She’s intimating but we worry too much about facing her. Give her credit though. She’s hard working and comes ready to play,” said Anderson.

During that game the Vikings played well until the fourth inning when they gave up six runs.

The Vikings played McGregor at home on Friday, May 4 and won 13-3.

“During the McGregor game we hit the ball well and their young pitchers gave up a lot of walks. Maddy Roy did an awesome job filling in for Anna Carman catching. [Carman is out for the year with an injury to her back.] She also stepped it up at the plate going 3-4 with a triple. Signe Larson got a double and CeCe Schnobrich also went 2-3. It was a good game for us,” said Anderson.

For the season the Vikings are in sixth place in the conference with a 3-6 record. At press time they were facing Floodwood on Thursday, May 10, and the next night faced Northeast Range at home.
